This is a splendid vintage Underwood 18 manual typewriter, made in Italy in 1965 (serial number U-794638-120) and designed by Carlo Grassi. It comes with the original brown textured vinyl case with its twist-lock fastener and arched handles. This is a great example of mid-century design by Underwood. (It may remind you of an Olivetti 22, but with starker edges, or even an Hermès Baby, for its low profile.)

This is an all-metal ultra-portable typewriter measuring 12 x 11 x 2.5 inches and weighs 10 lbs. The case measures approximately 12.5 x 11.5 x 3 inches.

What is most unique about this typewriter is the ribbon color selector. It resides in front of the carriage, to the right of the vibrator, with the ribbon itself going over the selector plate. To change the color you press down, then slide the button to the new position. Very slick! Also, when the carriage return is folded into the closed position, it automatically prevents the platen from turning. However, rolling the platen by hand causes the return lever to spring out into the ready position. A nice touch!

You may appreciate the backspace key, which is an arrow straight out of a quiver! Notice also the fraction key with the 3/4 and the exclamation point on the lower case position. Have you ever seen an exclamation point in the lower case position? You may also be very impressed with the light typing touch.

Here are the additional features: carriage lock, paper release lever, margin stops, line space selector (1, 2 & 0), ribbon color change, and auto-ribbon reverse.

Overall, this unique Italian-made "travel" typewriter is in great shape both cosmetically and mechanically and is fully functional right down to the bell. Despite being compact, streamlined, and lightweight, this typewriter is actually an exceptional typer and is fit for heavy use.
