1949 Smith-Corona Silent

This is Tom Hanks' favorite pick in the famous 2016 documentary, 'California Typewriter'

This is the iconic Smith-Corona Silent typewriter made in 1949 (serial number 5S145663). It is a three-stripe, tri-tone color scheme, crinkle paint finish in brown with hunter green keys, lighter green accessory keys, and chocolate brown space-bar. The brown carriage knobs matches the space-bar. The carrying case is in excellent condition, with normal wear. The latch opens and closes easily and stores the typewriter securely. An especially nice feature of this machine is the ability to remove the platen for easy cleaning or replacement.

This machine measures 13.5 x 13.5 x 6 inches and weighs 16.9 pounds.

The frame and body remind you of a 1950s Chevrolet or Ford automobile, which has that rounded "candy bar" style. There's a unique charm to this particular shape, color, and design of this machine -- resembling an upside-down bathtub on wheels! It is a marvelous, solidly made, earth-tone portable machine, that would conveniently be found in an office setting of a post-war era.

Underneath the machine, you'll have direct and ready access to all the mechanical parts. What is especially great about the design of this Smith-Corona is the escapement mechanism and gears, all readily available for servicing, cleaning, degreasing, lubrication, etc.

In terms of the keyboard and functions, there's a manual reverse lever for the ribbon direction, ribbon color selector, preset tabs (defined by the sixe [6] tab slugs in the rear carriage), margin release button, and left and right shift keys. This is an American-style keyboard, which is noted by the dollar sign above the "4" key, and 1/4 and 1/2 keys for fractions. You will have to use the lowercase 'L' key to print the number '1'. It also has an ergonomic paper bale, for easy reach, and has three adjustable hard rubber paper rollers. The left and right "margin stop" simply push and slide into place, and the 'bunny ears' paper support folds out from the back panel (which easily tucks back into place). The carriage return lever rests low, for an easy and effortless reach. The line space selector setting allows for single, double, or three line spacing. (If you pull out the little knob, which is found inside the left platen knob, you will be able to permanently adjust the vertical line spacing.)

The ribbon cover pulls right up, with a subtle spring tension, and clips down into place. The Touch Selector setting (H-6-5-4-3-2-L), which controls the force of the typebar, and can be adjusted accordingly, depending on you typing preference. It has a "floating shift," which allows easy basket shifting with a light pinky finger force. It uses Elite typeface at 12 characters per inch.

This machine uses standard/universal ribbon spools. For your convenience, a fresh new purple ribbon has been installed for immediate use. (The purple ribbon came from FJA Products, a great U.S. combat veteran owned and operated company.)
