1948 Remington Rand Deluxe Model 5

Art Deco design with two-tone deluxe & 'Self Starter' paragraph key.

This is an absolutely stunning Art Deco design Remington Rand Deluxe Model 5 which was made in America in 1948 (serial no. B1646135). This vintage portable typewriter has been very well-kept, preserved, and protected for over 70 years. It's in near-mint shape, which is incredible for its age. The two-tone gray semi-gloss paint finish is superb, with no scratches, scuffs, or areas of missing paint. Every single label is intact, save for the rear decal which is a little rubbed off. This typewriter is fully functional right down to the bell, which has one of the most beautiful sounds in a typewriter.

This typewriter weighs 12 lbs (16.8 lbs. with the case) and measures 12.25 x 12 x 4.75 inches. It comes with its original hard duo-case for easy storage and portability as well as the key to lock the case. The carrying case is in good condition with some scratches, scrapes, and normal wear. It has a 10-character per inch in Pica typeface. It comes with an 88-character standard keyboard and a 'Self Starter' key which advances the line five spaces (useful when you start a new paragraph). There's no corrosion or surface rust on any of the steel body or segment slots. This machine has been spot-cleaned, serviced, and tuned for optimal performance.

This typewriter does not use universal ribbons, however, the original spools can easily be re-thread using universal ribbon. For your convenience, a fresh new two-color nylon ribbon has been installed for immediate use.

The black keys are made of Bakelite, and the special 'Self Starter' key gives you five space advances anywhere on the line while you type. This does away with a tabulator that you will have to set up. The touch control semi-dial provides five positions, depending on your typing preference.

This typewriter will put you in touch with literary history: the prolific and influential American author, Harlan Ellison, wrote his work using a Remington Deluxe. Helen Gurley Brown, former editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan and celebrated author of fiction, also used the Model 5. That's what we like to call an iconic typewriter!

This is a fantastic typer and built like a tank, yet it's a rather fine writing instrument. We would highly recommend using this machine to write something like a novel or letter-writing and can confidently be used heavily and reliably.

If you're a fan of Art Deco machines like we are, then this fabulous typewriter would be a great addition to a collector, for display, or practical use.
