1938 L.C. Smith & Corona 'Silent'
Made by Smith-Corona
This typewriter is in remarkable condition, mechanically, for an octogenarian.
This is the stunningly beautiful Corona "Silent" classic typewriter with its original hard carrying case. This is an American-made pre-war machine that was manufactured by L.C. Smith & Corona Typewriters, Inc. in 1938 (serial no. 2S 68466).
See this machine in action:
It measures 12 x 12.5 x 5 inches (carrying case 13 x 13 x 6 inches) and weighs 9.4 lbs. This typewriter is an early Silent Portable, finished in high gloss piano-black paint. It is in full working order and it comes with its own black hard protective carry case. For your convenience, a fresh new two-tone ribbon has been fitted for immediate use.
The 1930s decade was of particular significance, emerging from the depths of the Great Depression, the company launched a line of new portables: Standard, Sterling, and Silent. The line is best known for its introduction of "Floating Shift" -- a superior shift mechanism that lowers the type bar basket instead of the carriage when typing capitals. The Silent model may remind you of a Rolls-Royce Phantom 1 Coupe automobile from the '20s for its handsome classic design. It came with many features available to standard office machines like soundproof typing and an interchangeable platen. This model remained tremendously popular and was produced until the 1950s under the company's new name, Smith-Corona.
It can type in both black or red, with a 'stencil' option, which can be used to make carbon copies. This typewriter is in remarkable condition, mechanically, for an octogenarian. Everything works and functions properly. It has been spot cleaned, serviced, and lubed.
If you're a fan of pre-war machines like we are, then this fabulous typewriter would be a great addition to a collector, for display, or practical use to write your novel or correspondence.
