1959 Remington Quiet-Riter Eleven
Made by Remington
Halldór Laxness, the Icelandic writer and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, used a Quiet-Riter.
This classic Quiet-Riter Eleven typewriter was manufactured by the Remington Rand Corporation in 1959 (serial no. QR3732434). This vintage portable typewriter has been very well-kept, preserved, and protected for over 60 years. The typewriter comes with its original vinyl hard carry case for easy storage and portability.
This machine weighs 12 lbs. (17 lbs. with the case) and measures 13x14.5x5.5 inches. It has a 12-character per inch in Elite typeface. It has all the features of a full-sized model including an 88 character standard keyboard, a Miracle Tab that set and cleared stops making indenting easier, a cylinder that allows you to type closer towards the bottom of the frame, and shock-resistant compressed steel (Cycolac) body. The knobs and keytops are made from Bakelite with polished chrome accents around the ribbon cover. There's no corrosion or surface rust on any of the steel body or segment slots. This machine has been spot-cleaned, serviced, and tuned for optimal performance.
This typewriter will put you in touch with literary history: Halldór Laxness, the Icelandic writer and winner of the 1955 Nobel Prize in Literature, used a Quiet-Riter. Other notable users include Hermann Hesse, the German-born Swiss poet, novelist, and painter; Alistair MacLean, a popular Scottish novelist; and Alberto Moravia, the celebrated Italian novelist, and journalist. Now, that's what we like to call an iconic typewriter!
This typewriter is in excellent condition all around and is fully functional right down to the sweet bell. The touch-type is smooth and reliable, and this typewriter would be an excellent machine for heavy and/or frequent use. Cosmetically, the light-gray paint is smooth and in great shape. The chrome accents shine like new, and there's no surface rust anywhere. You can use universal ribbons to thread Remington's unique spool system. For your convenience, a fresh new nylon bi-chrome ribbon has been installed for immediate use (see inset photo). We never want to place the onus on the user to have to worry about buying spools separately. You will be able to start using this machine upon receiving it!
